Know a musician? Help NN-SL

NN-SL officially seeking donations of MP3 recordings of original songs from any and all musicians for use as part of a collection to be sold on Second Life and possibly itunes as a fundraiser for Netroots Nation in Second Life. Email submissions to rev.paperboy@gmail.com. We need an MP3 and a brief amount of artist info - a couple of sentences is enough- and we need it ASAP in order to get things put together in time for the inauguration. Not all submissions will necessarily end up in the collection, but the Rev will listen to everything sent in and try to whittle it down to a manageable dozen or so tunes.

Zath's Album Cafe and Steampunk Holiday Skating Party - Sarah McLachlan, Wintersong
Forget the War on Christmas; DJ Zathras wants a War on Christmas Music--the bad stuff, anyway.  You know, the treacly garbage that drizzles out of the PA at Walmart starting just after Halloween.
That's what makes Wintersong such a joy--it's impeccable, emotive seasonal music that doesn't beat you over the head every minute with the fact that you're listening to Christmas music.  So take a break from the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations and skate the night away to this delightful album, plus a mix of Zath's holiday favorites from throughout the years!
Free Skates and other steampunk-themed goodies (don't miss Hypatia's latest creation, the amazing, steam-powered Skål's Glögg-O-Matic) will be available at Zath and Hyp's winter wonderland in the sky!

Zath's Album CafeUncle Tupelo, "No Depression"

Before Wilco, before Son Volt, before alt.country, there was Uncle Tupelo.  No Depression, the album that spawned a movement, sparkles with the creative tension of standing with one booted foot firmly in the punk rock of the band's origins, and the other just as firmly in the twangy, roots-driven jangle that Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar would pursue with those two later bands after Tupelo's breakup.  Come to the Cafe Wellstone as DJ Zathras spins one of the foundational albums of Insurgent Country.

6 pm
Zath's Album Cafe - Joe Jackson, Look Sharp!
British pop chameleon Joe Jackson's 1979 debut album, Look Sharp!, may quite rightfully be #22 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Album Covers of All Time, but that's nothing compared to what was inside the sleeve.  So come do the Instant Mash at the Cafe Wellstone as DJ Zathras spins Jackson's deceptively simple New Wave groove.  The Second British Invasion was seldom more danceable.

Spartan-Style Wrestling with Ron Skytower
In an effort to treat Ron Skytower and the SL Republicans with all the seriousness they deserve, I've  challenged Skytower  to allow me to honor him as only one cultural warrior may honor another cultural warrior. That is to say, wrestling in the manner of the ancient warriors of Sparta, naked and oiled. Yes, we shall grapple, oiled flesh meeting oiled flesh, until one of us achieves victory by driving his hard spear of manhood deep into the other's dark cave of shame. And we will discuss politics and raise money for Books for Soldiers (this event is not endorsed by Books for Soldiers) while we are at it.
I'll also be DJing and playing the best of Barry White to put us all in that cultural warrior mood.

7:00 pm
Dancing Liberally - War On Christmas
It's that time of year again. I've been receiving War Against christmas alerts since before Halloween. It's a shame. The War on Christmas starts earlier and earlier every year. Let's mark the occasion by dressing up in our best holiday gear (any holiday), discussing the day's events,  and dancing to the best tunes DJs Jane and Rocky have to offer. Lindens awarded for best outfits.

Groovin' on a Sunday Afternoon!
With the unfortunate and untimely hiatus forced upon the Bluefooted Booby Bar, those left without a place to shake their groove thangs and get down with their bad selves are welcome to dance at the Red Zeppelin starting from about 5:30 until movie time. Given the nature of this week's movie, I think an office/media theme might be appropriate or perhaps - in memory of the Booby - your favorite comemmorative beachwear. RevPaperboy Boozehound will be bouncing the bytes for your grooving pleasure.

7:30pm
Movies at the Red Zeppelin
This Sunday the glorious People's Marxist Lennonist Cinema Project presents an investigative report on the decadent lifestyles of the capitalist media: "His girl, friday" starring Carey Grant and Rosalind Russell. Also assorted shorts

A few words about irrelevance

Aspiring Free-Republic-grade intellectual and SL Republican celebrity Ron Skytower sent me the following:
General - I was interested to read the various comments posted on your website about our debate. I do have to say that I'm astonished that most [That would be "all," Ron] of them seem to think that you won somehow! That is simply not the case [OK, Ron. I'm glad you cleared that up]... Would you like to do a rematch?
I'll leave it to you all to decide who won the debate. Inasmuch as I had no time to prepare, my delivery was not as polished as Skytower's, but I think I pretty much tore Ron a new one. Like I said, you decide--if you can stomach Ron's long, tedious attempts to conflate liberalism with communism (complete with photos of Marx) and his assertions that Obama will make Miami look like Havana or Pyongyang (again with photos).

Don't wait to hear another debate, because there won't be one. There's no point to debating Ron and the rest of the lunatic fringe. Their rantings about Marxism, "islamofascism," "unAmericanism," "treason" and laissez faire economics are irrelevant to any serious political discussion in this country. Overton's window has shifted to the rational part of the political spectrum, where the reason-based community resides. The discussion is now between liberals and the so-called "centrists." Arguing with people who think Obama is a secret Muslim communist and the Earth is only 6000 years old is pointless. It's like debating a small child or more accurately, a male labrador retriever. No matter what you say, he'll continue to hump your leg, knowing with certainty that if he just humps long enough, your shoes will bear puppies. All you get out of it is a sticky leg.

Some of us danced at the Yak.

6 pm
Zath's Album Cafe
If nothing else good came out of the Resident's ignominious eight-year tenure, at least we have 2004's brilliant, anti-Bush, anti-war rock opera from Green Day, American Idiot. We were going to listen to this last Tuesday, but we were so busy celebrating Barack Obama's historic victory, we never got around to it! So join us at the Cafe Wellstone as DJ Zathras spins the album he has on "repeat" every election day.

4:00 pm

Dancing Liberally - Pioneers
On this day in 1889, Nellie Bly set out to beat Jule's Vern's fictional Fineas Fogg's 80 day circumnavigation of the Earth. She did it in 79. That was quite an accomplishment in itself for the time, but perhaps not as great as an accomplishment as that of a woman becoming a world-famous celebrity journalist at a time when women could not even vote. Let's celebrate Nellie's accomplishment and those of all the great pioneers and feminists of the past by dressing up in period or steam punk costume and dance our modern day butts of to DJs Rocky's and Jane's best tunage. Lindens awarded for best outfits.

3pm
DJ Zathras at the Twisted Wheel
The year:  1965.  The place:  Northern England.  The style:  Mod, baby, mod!  If you were at Zath's Album Cafe for the Who's Quadrophenia last month, you may remember Slate McLeod, Ace Face of the Second Life Mods, he of the brilliant scooters and fishtail parkas.  Slate has crafted a terrific 1960s-themed build, so dress up in your favorite Mod or other 1960s clothing style and come to the opening of Slate's club, the Twisted Wheel, to dance as DJ Zathras spins the R&B and soul that rocked the North Country (plus his usual eclectic mix, of course!).  It'll be a trans-Atlantic happening!  (If you want a place to start looking for Mod threads, try Carnaby Street at Ulreung 44, 184, 99; or check out Slate's new clothing store on his sim later in the week.)

7:00 pm
Pink Saturday 1: The Beginning
DJ Serenity will be doing the honours at the Yak since Rocky can't stay awake past 9 pm.  Fire our bosses!
