In the summer of 1971, a then-little-known blues singer and slide guitarist from California, Bonnie Raitt (the daughter of Broadway legend John Raitt) traveled to an empty summer camp in the middle of Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota with producer and Minnesota blues legend Willie Murphy and his band, The Bees, and made music history. Come to the Cafe Wellstone to hear DJ Zathras spin Raitt's self-titled debut, an earthy mix of original material and blues standards, followed by his usual eclectic brew!

In late 1968, while the rest of the rock world was still trying to find a way to bottle and mass-market the psychedelic success of Sgt. Pepper, the Kinks met modest success with the gently nostalgic The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, a ironic paean to a lost, pastoral Britain that may never have truly existed. But in time, it would become one of the great cult classics of the Kinks' long career. After the album, DJ Zathras spins an eclectic mix with a heavy dose of classic 60s, both famous and obscure.

What are the issues on Second Life that effect the gay community? Does second life provide a backdrop for increased tolerance or does Second Life mask homophobia with sexual undertones? An example of this would be that it is OK for lesbians to get together on SL for a sexual relationship but perhaps they are not taken seriously as a hetro couple.

Dancing Liberally - Taking a stand

Sixty-Eight years ago this week, Dutch truck drivers, dock and metal workers, civil servants and factory employees — Christians, Liberals, Social Democrats and Communists--brought commerce in the city of Amsterdam to a halt when they engaged in a general strike protesting their Nazi occupiers treatment of Jews. Two days later the strike was called off: nine people were dead, 50 injured and another 200 arrested, some of whom were to die in the concentration camps. Think about that the next time you make an excuse for shopping at Wal-Mart or stay silent as co-workers or family make racist, sexist or homophobic remarks.

This week we'll discuss the courage of those brave Dutch strikers and the courage we need to find within ourselves as we dance to the music of DJ Rocky. Lindens awarded to those in out fits that best evoke the spirit of the strikers and those who take a stand against oppression anywhere.

Near the end of his life and career, Johnny Cash teamed with legendary producer Rick Rubin for the American Recordings series of albums, mixtures of original songs and unexpected covers that constitute some of the most vital work of Cash's long career. The fourth album in the series, 2002's The Man Comes Around, was the last studio album Cash released prior to his death in 2002, and is worth a listen for his redefining cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" alone. Jonathan Demme's groundbreaking 1984 Talking Heads chronicle, Stop Making Sense, was easily the best concert film since Scorsese's The Last Waltz. So it should be no surprise that its soundtrack is also an outstanding live album. Come to the Cafe Wellstone to hear DJ Zathras spin the 1999 remaster from this classic New York punk band. After the album, Zath will spin more punk, protopunk, post-punk, and punk's far-flung, bastard stepchildren.

We asked and you answered! Fez Records went looking for your musical contributions for a downloadable album to raise money for Netroots Nation in Second Life and you came through. Now, its time to celebrate the release of "The Revolution Will Be Streamed" - available now at Amazon.com and soon on iTunes. We are having an album release party on Saturday from 7 pm SLT with live performances from some of the people who contributed to the album, including podcasting king Caleb Bullen, professional conscience Billy Bob Neck and SL's own Klipe Wirefly. This is an event not to be missed! We will start off at 7 pm at the Netroot Nations Ballroom and play the whole 14 track album from about 8 pm SLT and then keep the party going all night long.

Notice how I did not say God of War. We always talk about whether or not God backs war, and if he does is he on a particular side? Ironically, when we look throughout history we can see two certainties. The first is that hate destroys and takes. The second is that love creates and is quite productive. When we see this contrast, for those who believe in God, wouldn't it be assumed that since God is the creator God is then love. Would love back a war?

We need an MP3 and a brief amount of artist info - a couple of sentences is enough- and we need it ASAP in order to get things put together in time for the inauguration. Saturday, December 20th is an all day music marathon at the Netroots Nation ballroom to raise funds for the Inaugural bash and for our other upcoming Netroots Nation in Second Life activities.

The party starts at 1pm with the brilliant live musical performers Pillowfish, followed by BlindBoink Parham.

After the live performances, djs Rocky Torok, Dano Bookmite, Rodolpho Teardrop, Jane2 McMahon, and Zathras Afarensis, and Revpaperboy Boozehound take over and will keep the music playing until 10pm or when the last dj falls over. We will have contests and give aways all day. Don't miss the party!

Second Life will be part of this world-wide celebration with an extraordinary six day line up of events, including Live Music, Art & Photo Exhibits, Discussion and Education events, Theatre, Poetry Slams, and Machinima presentations. Special builds on a number of participating sims are being constructed to showcase these events. This is BIG!

A few words about irrelevance

Aspiring Free-Republic-grade intellectual and SL Republican celebrity Ron Skytower sent me the following:

General - I was interested to read the various comments posted on your website about our debate. I do have to say that I'm astonished that most [That would be "all," Ron] of them seem to think that you won somehow! That is simply not the case [OK, Ron. I'm glad you cleared that up]... Would you like to do a rematch?

I'll leave it to you all to decide who won the debate. Inasmuch as I had no time to prepare, my delivery was not as polished as Skytower's, but I think I pretty much tore Ron a new one. Like I said, you decide--if you can stomach Ron's long, tedious attempts to conflate liberalism with communism (complete with photos of Marx) and his assertions that Obama will make Miami look like Havana or Pyongyang (again with photos).

Don't wait to hear another debate, because there won't be one. There's no point to debating Ron and the rest of the lunatic fringe. Their rantings about Marxism, "islamofascism," "unAmericanism," "treason" and laissez faire economics are irrelevant to any serious political discussion in this country. Overton's window has shifted to the rational part of the political spectrum, where the reason-based community resides. The discussion is now between liberals and the so-called "centrists." Arguing with people who think Obama is a secret Muslim communist and the Earth is only 6000 years old is pointless. It's like debating a small child or more accurately, a male labrador retriever. No matter what you say, he'll continue to hump your leg, knowing with certainty that if he just humps long enough, your shoes will bear puppies. All you get out of it is a sticky leg.

On this day in 1889, Nellie Bly set out to beat Jule's Vern's fictional Fineas Fogg's 80 day circumnavigation of the Earth. She did it in 79. That was quite an accomplishment in itself for the time, but perhaps not as great as an accomplishment as that of a woman becoming a world-famous celebrity journalist at a time when women could not even vote. Let's celebrate Nellie's accomplishment and those of all the great pioneers and feminists of the past by dressing up in period or steam punk costume and dance our modern day butts of to DJs Rocky's and Jane's best tunage. Lindens awarded for best outfits.

If you were at Zath's Album Cafe for the Who's Quadrophenia last month, you may remember Slate McLeod, Ace Face of the Second Life Mods, he of the brilliant scooters and fishtail parkas. Slate has crafted a terrific 1960s-themed build, so dress up in your favorite Mod or other 1960s clothing style and come to the opening of Slate's club, the Twisted Wheel, to dance as DJ Zathras spins the R&B and soul that rocked the North Country (plus his usual eclectic mix, of course!). It'll be a trans-Atlantic happening! As we continued to pray against the spirit of witchcraft, her incense
altar caught on fire, her car engine blew up, she went blind in her left

Michelle Bachman has some rather scathing views of those who she labels liberals. Yet, liberals make up a large portion of the State of Minnesota. As an elected official she has made a concentrated effort to not represent part of this population. Classism continues to be as pervasive if not worse than it was years ago. Classism is the concerted as well as the inadvertent product of a social system which disables a lower economic class, rendering it difficult if not impossible to attain resources or change policies. Classism creates an unfair advantage for some. And, while competition is important and crucial within a capitalistic society, if the classism issue is not directly addressed it gets worse, and capitalism ends up a sad little dream of days lost.

Let's celebrate this anniversary with a little dancing and discussion about the sate of the arts after 8 years of Republican rule. The Arts frighten conservatives because they evoke thoughts and emotions from within rather than through the approved channels for indoctrination. That's why they've fought hard to defund the arts and humanities and have been very successful in doing so.

The last (and best) of country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons' albums was released in January 1974, four months after his premature death in a Joshua Tree motel room from (as they once said of Bix Beiderbecke) "too much of everything." Ahead of its time and too country for Nashville, Grievous Angel's brilliant instrumention and aching harmonies helped launch the enduring career of Parsons' singing partner, Emmylou Harris, and served as a worthy blueprint for the alt.country movement that would emerge in the 1980s and 1990s. -Submission deadline - 11pm SLT on Saturday (The schedule runs from the following Mon to Sun.)

-Submissions must be sent by email to gen.jc.christian@gmail.com with the header "calendar." If you do not do this I will lose it.

-Submissions must include:

Title of event
description of event
Slurl

-Either the event venue must be owned by a member of Cafe Wellstone or the people organizing it must be members

- I will not publish events given to me via chat or notecards.

-I may post multiple events for the same time at my discretion.

-I may exclude events at my discretion if I feel they will draw the same crowd as an established event
